How Many Lumens Do You Need? A Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Brightness
How Many Lumens Do You Need? A Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Brightness
Why Lumens Matter in Your Lighting Choice
When it comes to lighting, many people still think in “watts.” But what really matters today is not energy consumption, but the amount of light emitted, measured in lumens (lm). The higher the lumens, the brighter the lamp. Understanding this unit is essential to adapt the lighting to your needs—avoiding both too dim or too harsh illumination.
How Many Lumens Per Room?
How Many Lumens Per Room?
Each room has different lighting requirements depending on its function and atmosphere:
Living Room: 100–150 lumens/m²
The living room is a space for relaxation and socializing. Soft ambient lighting combined with reading lamps or wall lights ensures comfort. A 20 m² living room requires about 3000 lumens spread across multiple sources.
Dining Room: 150–200 lumens/m²
Lighting should be warm yet functional. A central suspension above the table typically provides 2000–3000 lumens, complemented by accent lighting.
Kitchen: 200–300 lumens/m²
A technical space that requires strong and even illumination. For a 10 m² countertop, plan for around 2500 lumens using LED strips or spotlights.
Bedroom: 100–150 lumens/m²
A soft light promotes relaxation. A ceiling light of around 1500 lumens, paired with bedside lamps (300–500 lumens each), works perfectly.
Bathroom: 200–300 lumens/m²
Precise lighting is needed for daily grooming. Choose a powerful LED ceiling light and mirror sconces of 400–800 lumens. A 6 m² bathroom needs about 1500 lumens in total.
Home Office: 300–500 lumens/m²
Bright, focused light reduces eye strain and boosts concentration. A 10 m² office should have about 3000 lumens, with a desk lamp providing 500–800 lumens directly on the workspace.
Hallways & Stairs: 100 lumens/m²
Enough light for safe passage. LED strips or wall lights of 500–1000 lumens are sufficient depending on length.

2700K–3000K → warm light for bedrooms and living rooms.
3000K–4000K → neutral light for dining areas and kitchens.
4000K–5000K → cool light for offices and bathrooms.
