Jars Céramistes – When Clay Gives Birth to Light

Jars Céramistes – When Clay Gives Birth to Light

French craftsmanship, artistic ceramics and the luminous Sillage collection

French craftsmanship, artistic ceramics and the luminous Sillage collection

Since 1857, Jars Céramistes has cultivated an intimate relationship with clay, light and gesture. Based in Anneyron, a small village in the South of France, the manufacture brings together a collective of highly skilled artisans who perpetuate a rare and ancestral craft: shaping stoneware by hand, creating deep and vibrant glazes, and giving life to ceramics that breathe and resonate.

With Sillage, its very first lighting collection designed by Elise Fouin, Jars opens a new artistic chapter — one where light emerges from clay, textured, pleated and sculpted like a poetic echo of the natural world.

1. A French manufacture since 1857 – 167 years of expertise

Founded in 1857, Jars is one of France’s great historic ceramic houses.

Each day in the Anneyron workshops, artisans shape clay following a choreography of precise, repeated gestures passed down through generations.

The brand formulates its own stoneware clay from carefully sourced natural earths. Cleaned, sieved and assembled according to a secret recipe, this clay gives Jars stoneware its distinctive whiteness, ideal for enhancing the depth of the brand’s iconic glazes.

Jars means:

  • 167 years of French craftsmanship

  • artisanal production rooted in local know-how

  • mastery of stoneware as a noble, expressive material

  • continuous research into form, color and glaze

2. The art of glazing – Jars’ most precious secret

2. The art of glazing – Jars’ most precious secret

Jars is renowned for its exclusive glazes.

Created through decades of experimentation, these glazes reveal:

  • crystallized textures

  • matte or glossy finishes

  • deep, vibrant shades

  • subtle crackle effects

The glazes are applied by hand — ladled, brushed or delicately sprayed — before undergoing a high-temperature “grand feu” firing.

During this fusion, the glaze merges with the clay, revealing its depth, nuances and delicate variations.

Each piece becomes truly unique — a living ceramic.

3. A modern, eclectic and timeless ceramic identity

3. A modern, eclectic and timeless ceramic identity

Jars embraces eclecticism as a creative strength.

The manufacture designs collections with distinct aesthetics, yet all share the same DNA: natural elegance, expressive textures, and a poetic irregularity that makes every object feel alive.

The brand’s creations are:

  • contemporary yet timeless

  • refined yet robust

  • artistic yet functional

  • designed to be mixed, layered and enjoyed daily

Beyond trends, Jars focuses on authentic beauty — a quiet luxury rooted in craftsmanship.

4. Sustainability as a foundation – A responsible and grounded vision

4. Sustainability as a foundation – A responsible and grounded vision

Environmental responsibility is inherent to Jars.

Every aspect of production reflects a deep respect for the earth, their primary material for more than 167 years.

Jars prioritizes:

  • natural and safe materials

  • circular processes (recycling clay, water and kiln heat)

  • local and European sourcing

  • ethical and durable manufacturing

For Jars, sustainability is not a trend — it is simply the natural way of working with clay.

5. Sillage – When clay meets light

5. Sillage – When clay meets light

Sillage marks Jars’ first incursion into lighting design.

Imagined by Elise Fouin, the collection explores a dialogue between mineral textures and sculptural light.

✧ Organic inspiration

Sillage draws inspiration from:

  • the furrows carved by wind

  • the ripples of soil

  • mineral reliefs shaped by nature

The stoneware is pleated, folded or textured to create a fascinating interplay between shadow and illumination.

✧ A gentle and sculptural light

Each Sillage lamp emits a warm, soft and enveloping glow.

The thickness and relief of the stoneware create a light that feels tactile, architectural and soothing.

✧ A handmade, French-crafted piece of art

Every lamp is shaped and glazed by hand in the Jars workshops.

A Sillage lamp is more than lighting — it is a sculptural object, a piece of art, a fragment of landscape captured in clay.
