Pipistrello Originale – Iconic table lamp for sculptural interior lighting
An icon of Italian design since 1965
Created by Gae Aulenti, the Pipistrello Originale is one of the most legendary pieces in Italian lighting design. Its distinctive silhouette, reminiscent of bat wings caught mid-flight, expresses a bold yet graceful vision. Still handcrafted in Italy by Martinelli Luce, it blends artistic creativity with timeless refinement and technical precision.
A functional and elegant design
The lamp features a telescopic brushed stainless steel arm that adjusts its height between 70 and 86 cm, offering great flexibility. Whether used on a desk, sideboard, or low console, it becomes both a light source and a design statement. Its large opal white methacrylate diffuser spreads a soft, even light across the room, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere.
Two lighting options for tailored use
Pipistrello Originale is available with either 4 replaceable E14 LED bulbs (4 × 4 W, 1800 lm total) or a dimmable integrated LED module (14 W, 1400 lm). The light color remains consistent across both versions at 2700K, a very warm white ideal for relaxing environments. The integrated LED version includes a dimmer directly on the cable, while the bulb version uses a simple inline switch.
High-end materials and refined finishes
The lamp is crafted from metal and opal white methacrylate, with a 55 cm diffuser resting on a solid 24 cm base. The White Matt finish, created for the brand’s 60th anniversary, gives the entire structure a soft, satin-like texture, enhancing its sculptural dimension. The long power cable (2.45 meters total) ensures flexible positioning in any room.
Durable and timeless, made in Italy
More than a lamp, Pipistrello is a heritage piece. Its average lifespan reaches 50,000 hours for the LED version and 25,000 hours with replaceable bulbs. Depending on the configuration, it weighs between 8.8 and 9.6 kg, offering both stability and presence. Designed to illuminate and elevate interiors, this icon remains as relevant and captivating today as when it was first imagined.
