The PH Artichoke by Louis Poulsen, also known as the Artichoke pendant lamp, is one of the most iconic pieces of Scandinavian design. More than a premium luminaire, it is a true light sculpture: striking, beautifully crafted, and above all designed to deliver soft, comfortable, glare-free lighting.
Available in several diameters, the PH Artichoke also offers different dimming technologies depending on the version: DALI, Bluetooth, or phase dimming (mains dimm). The PH Artichoke is made of 72 precisely arranged metal leaves, assembled in 12 rows of 6 leaves each. This ingenious design hides the light source from almost every angle, ensuring a perfectly comfortable, non-dazzling light.
Its name refers to its distinctive, organic silhouette: like an artichoke, the overlapping “leaves” distribute light both inward and outward, creating a warm and refined atmosphere.
Designed by Poul Henningsen, the PH Artichoke was created in 1958 for the famous Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen. Henningsen completed it in just three months, building upon earlier research from the late 1920s and early 1930s focused on light diffusion and visual comfort.
To this day, the PH Artichoke can still be admired at the Langelinie Pavilion—an unmistakable symbol of timeless design.
