Discover the AJ Royal 50 Pendant Lamp by Louis Poulsen, a Timeless Design by Arne Jacobsen

The AJ Royal 50 pendant lamp is a testament to Arne Jacobsen's ingenious design, originally developed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection) in 1957. This iconic fixture was prominently displayed in copper finish above the snack bar tables behind the atrium, in the first-floor lounge, and in the panoramic lounge on the 21st floor, contributing to the ambiance of Copenhagen's first real skyscraper which opened in 1960. The segmented spherical shape introduced by Jacobsen in 1957 marks his initial exploration into simple geometric forms, a characteristic that would define the later works of the famous Danish architect. The AJ Royal was a key element of the overall decorative concept Jacobsen created for the hotel, with several models from this project becoming iconic. Jacobsen's vision extended to every detail of the hotel, designed for SAS airlines, including nearly all the original furniture and accessories. Among these, the AJ lamps, especially the 1957 AJ lamp, are perhaps the most internationally recognized. Initially produced in three colors: light grey, dark brown, and black, the AJ Royal is now available in its original sizes in white, with the series also making a comeback in black. A smaller version of the lamp was introduced in 2020 to commemorate the hotel's 60th anniversary. The AJ Royal maintains its classic, highly graphic style, elegantly illuminating dining tables, offices, or exhibition spaces with excellent directed lighting downwards and a pleasant ambiance thanks to its subtle upward lighting.

Lighting Concept

The pendant is available in three sizes, distinguished by slots at the top that allow for delicate upward lighting. In the new energy-saving LED version, all three sizes come with a diffuser that provides a softer, anti-glare illumination.

Light Source

The lamp features a 2700K 30W LED light source, emitting 2242 lumens, made from white painted steel and aluminum. A frosted acrylic diffuser ensures the light is softly distributed, avoiding glare. The lamp is fitted with an energy-saving integrated LED light source, compatible with standard phase-cut dimmers.

Louis Poulsen: A Luminous Heritage of Danish Design

Louis Poulsen, a brand synonymous with excellence and innovation in the world of modern Danish lighting, has paved its way since its inception in 1874. What began as a humble wine import business has transformed into a beacon of bright design, establishing standards of functionality, comfort, and ambiance that today define luxury lighting. The historic partnership with architect Poul Henningsen in 1924 led to revolutionary creations like the Paris lamp, laying the foundations for functional and aesthetic lighting design.
