Poul Henningsen’s lighting design: PH 3/2 is based on Poul Henningsen’s renowned three-shade system, developed to provide harmonious, predominantly downward-directed light while reducing glare.

An iconic PH silhouette: Its upper shade measures approximately 30 cm and is combined with the lower shades from the PH 2/2 model. The frame is available in Brass Metallised, Black Metallised or High Lustre Chrome Plated.
Refined practical details: PH 3/2 features a spring system that securely holds the glass shades, a 3 m cord with Louis Poulsen switch and a silicone rubber pad beneath the base.

The PH 3/2 by Louis Poulsen embodies the scientific approach to light that Poul Henningsen began developing in 1925. His celebrated three-shade system was conceived to direct most of the light downwards while reducing glare and unwanted shadows. For 2026, the PH 3/2 retains its mouth-blown white opal glass shades while introducing a number of considered technical updates, including a new painted aluminium frame, a textile cord and an improved shade-mounting system.

Why does the PH 3/2 have three shades?

Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1925, drawing inspiration in part from the logarithmic spiral. This approach enabled him to control the reflection and distribution of light to create a more even and comfortable lighting experience. The first lamp based on the system was developed with Louis Poulsen for the Paris exhibition in 1925, where the design was awarded a gold medal.

The PH 3/2 name itself refers to the dimensions of its shades. It combines a top shade measuring approximately 30 cm with the smaller lower shades used on the PH 2/2. This combination gives the table lamp its distinctive proportions while preserving the lighting principles of the PH System.

Soft light through mouth-blown opal glass

The three shades are made from three-layered mouth-blown white opal glass. The outer layer is clear and polished, the middle layer is opal white, while the clear inner surface is sandblasted. This sophisticated construction softens and diffuses the light while allowing the shade system to direct a large proportion of the illumination downwards.

The PH 3/2 also incorporates a glass diffuser. Its harmonious and comfortable light makes it particularly suitable for a side table, console, desk or piece of furniture within a living space.

Which light source should you choose for the PH 3/2?

The PH 3/2 features an E14 lamp holder and, according to the supplied specifications for the European version, accepts a light source of up to 40W. The height of the light source can be adjusted to optimise its position within the three-shade system.

Rated IP20 and Class II, the PH 3/2 is designed for indoor use. It is equipped with a 3-metre cord and a Louis Poulsen switch.

What's new for the PH 3/2 in 2026?

The PH 3/2 has been carefully updated for 2026 while preserving Poul Henningsen's distinctive design. Its frame is now made from lightweight aluminium with a painted finish, accompanied by a new 3-metre textile cord with plug.

The spring mounting system securing the lower glass shades has been improved for a more secure fit. A new silicone rubber pad underneath the base also makes maintenance easier while helping to protect the surface beneath the lamp.

Measuring 28.5 cm in diameter and 47 cm high, with a weight of approximately 3.5 kg for the specified configuration, the PH 3/2 retains the elegant, balanced proportions and distinctive lighting qualities that define Louis Poulsen's PH family.
