The PH 5 320 Opal offers a new interpretation of the iconic PH 5 designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958. It translates the principles of the celebrated PH System into a more compact Ø 320 mm format while remaining true to the proportions and character of the original. Its slightly translucent, glossy opalescent acrylic shades introduce a softer ambient glow while preserving the comfortable, directional and glare-free lighting experience associated with the PH family.

The PH 5 reimagined in a compact 320 mm size

Poul Henningsen developed the original PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes in the shape and size of incandescent bulbs. The design was conceived to provide soft, pleasant and glare-free illumination.

With the PH 5 320 Opal, Louis Poulsen scales the iconic design down to a diameter of 320 mm. More compact than the Ø 500 mm PH 5, it is particularly well suited to smaller dining tables. Two pendants can also be arranged above a larger table, kitchen island or countertop to create a balanced lighting composition.

What kind of light does the PH 5 320 Opal provide?

The PH 5 320 Opal combines the directional, glare-free illumination of the original PH 5 with a softer and more diffuse ambient glow. Its shades are made from injection-moulded opalescent PMMA acrylic with a glossy outer surface, while the reflecting sides are painted white.

The slight translucency of the material allows light to glow gently through the shades, adding new depth through the interplay of light, gloss and texture. The bottom glass diffuser has also been removed from this version, allowing more light to be emitted directly downwards.

Which bulb should you choose for the PH 5 320 Opal?

The PH 5 320 Opal features an E14 lamp holder suitable for a light source of up to 20W. Louis Poulsen recommends, among other options, an LED bulb delivering 806 lumens.

The height of the light source can be adjusted by approximately 13 mm to optimise the lighting experience within the shade system. A 3-metre white fabric cord and Louis Poulsen's standard white top-hat canopy are included.

Which colours are available for the PH 5 320 Opal?

The soft pastel palette has been selected to enhance the opalescent quality of the material while maintaining an excellent lighting experience. Four finishes are available: Opal White, Opal Beige, Opal Pale Rose and Opal Blue. The reflecting surfaces are painted white across all colour variants.

Opal White, Opal Pale Rose and Opal Blue draw on the colour universe already explored with the opal Panthella, while Opal Beige introduces a new and slightly warmer shade. Combined with its Ø 320 mm proportions, this palette gives the PH 5 320 Opal a delicate contemporary expression while preserving the identity of a Louis Poulsen classic.
