The PH 2/1 wall lamp by Louis Poulsen, designed by Poul Henningsen, elegantly illuminates interiors with IP20 protection. It offers three versions: without a switch, with a switch on the base, and with a cable and switch on the base, adapting to various needs and installation preferences.
Henningsen's Innovation
Henningsen developed the three-shade system in 1925-1926, in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris, initiating a series of lighting innovations. He aimed to provide direct, glare-free lighting, creating soft shadows with incandescent bulbs for a welcoming ambiance.
An Extended Family of Luminaires
The three-shade luminaire family, including the PH 2/1 Parete, now comprises over 30 models, with three outdoor versions. Over the years, about a thousand different models have been produced, including table lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps, and many chandeliers popular in the 1930s for homes with high ceilings.
Materials and Design
The initial models featured metal shades with an underside painted in white, gold, or silver for different types of warm or cold lighting. The introduction of glass later allowed for broader room illumination while still directing light mainly downwards.
A Scientific Approach to Lighting
Henningsen adopted a scientific approach to lighting, using the logarithmic spiral for even light distribution. This method controls glare and shadows, with each shade reducing light proportionally to its distance from the light source.
The PH 2/1 Parete Model: A Hybrid Design
The PH 2/1 Parete is a "hybrid" model, using an upper shade of about 20 cm and lower shades identical to those in the 1/1 model, allowing flexibility in lamp suspension. The "full-size" models follow a 3:2:1 proportion, optimized for high placement without the risk of glare.
Features and Installation
Materials include shades made of blown white opal glass, with a chromed brass arm and wall box for a high-gloss finish. With a 2.9-meter cable and various switch options, the PH 2/1 Parete offers an adaptable and sophisticated lighting solution for any modern space.
