PH 2/1 Louis Poulsen – Iconic table lamp by Poul Henningsen
The PH 2/1 by Louis Poulsen continues the celebrated lighting system developed by Poul Henningsen in 1925 to create soft, harmonious and glare-free illumination. Its three mouth-blown white opal glass shades control the reflection of light and direct a large proportion of it downwards. For 2026, this iconic table lamp evolves with new coloured aluminium finishes, an improved internal diffuser and a series of carefully considered technical updates, while preserving the lighting principles of the original design.
Why does the PH 2/1 have three shades?
Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1925, drawing inspiration in part from the logarithmic spiral. The focal point of the light source is positioned at the centre of the spiral, allowing the reflection and distribution of light to be carefully controlled. Combined with diffuse reflection, this principle helps minimise glare and unwanted shadows while creating an even lighting experience.
The first lamp to use the system was developed with Louis Poulsen for the Paris exhibition in 1925, where it was awarded a gold medal. The PH 2/1 name refers to the dimensions of its shades: an upper shade measuring approximately 20 cm is combined with the smaller lower shades from the PH 1/1.
Mouth-blown opal glass for soft illumination
The three shades are made from three-layered mouth-blown white opal glass. The outer layer is clear and polished, the middle layer is opal white, while the clear inner surface is sandblasted. This layered construction creates a soft, diffused lighting effect while supporting the reflective principles of the PH System.
The PH 2/1 also features a redesigned internal glass diffuser to improve light distribution and reduce glare. The spring mounting system securing the lower glass shades has also been updated to provide a more secure fit.
Which light source should you choose for the PH 2/1?
The PH 2/1 features a G9 lamp holder. The European version accepts a light source of up to 33W. The height of the light source can be adjusted by approximately 14 mm to optimise its position within the three-shade system.
Measuring 35.5 cm high and 20 cm in diameter, with a Ø 12 cm base, the PH 2/1 has compact proportions that make it ideal for a side table, console, desk or a piece of furniture beside a sofa. It is rated IP20 and Class II.
What's new for the PH 2/1 in 2026?
The updated PH 2/1 introduces a painted aluminium frame in a selection of expressive glossy finishes: Glossy Beige, Glossy Burgundy, Glossy Deep Blue and Glossy Deep Green. These new colours bring a contemporary dimension to Poul Henningsen's design while retaining the characteristic white opal glass shades.
Louis Poulsen has also refined several functional details, including the new internal glass diffuser, an improved shade-mounting system, a new Louis Poulsen switch and a silicone rubber pad beneath the base. A new 3-metre textile cord with plug completes the updated design, bringing subtle improvements to everyday use while preserving the distinctive identity of the PH 2/1.
