Instantly recognisable by its large hemispherical shade and trumpet-shaped base, Panthella perfectly illustrates the Danish designer's ability to combine aesthetics with function. Its Ø 400 mm opal white shade creates a soft glow while directing light towards the base, which also contributes to the reflective lighting effect. The new V3 version preserves this unmistakable silhouette while introducing a series of subtle technical and aesthetic improvements.

How does the Panthella 400 create its distinctive light?

Verner Panton designed Panthella around an original principle: both the shade and the base should contribute to the lighting experience. The hemispherical opal acrylic shade allows soft, diffused light to pass through the material while directing part of the illumination downwards.

The distinctive trumpet-shaped base then contributes to reflecting the light into the surrounding space. Together, these elements create comfortable, glare-free atmospheric illumination while highlighting the organic forms that define Panthella.

A generously sized table lamp with a Ø 400 mm shade

With its 400 mm diameter shade, the Panthella 400 is the large table lamp within the Panthella family. It measures 542 mm high and 400 mm wide and weighs approximately 2.8 kg. Its generous proportions give it a strong decorative presence on a piece of furniture, console or large side table.

The shade is made from high-gloss injection-moulded opal white acrylic. The base and housing are crafted from injection-moulded polycarbonate, while the diffuser is made from opal polycarbonate. A high-lustre chrome-plated top nut adds a subtle metallic detail to the design.

What improvements does the Panthella 400 V3 introduce?

The V3 version introduces several subtle refinements while remaining faithful to Verner Panton's original 1971 design. The shadow beneath the top nut has been reduced, while the white colour of the shade has been aligned with the rest of the Panthella collection.

The mechanical strength of the diffuser has also been improved. The white colour of the housing and base is now consistent across the Panthella family, and their UV resistance has been enhanced. These updates refine the construction of the lamp without altering its iconic appearance.

The European version of the Panthella 400 Table V3 features an E27 lamp holder, allowing the colour temperature and light output to be selected according to the desired atmosphere.

The lamp comes with a 2.5-metre white plastic cord with plug and the new Louis Poulsen switch. Designed exclusively for indoor use, the Panthella 400 Table V3 is Class II and rated IP20.
