The Start of an Artistic Journey
Born in Belgium in 1967 to a Belgian mother and a Tunisian father, Donia Maaoui felt the pull of the artistic world early on. Her family moved from Tunisia to Brussels when she was only 7, marking the beginning of her life in Europe. During her younger years, she graced the catwalks for top fashion designers, already hinting at a career filled with adventures.
Solid Education and a Pivotal Encounter
In 1993, Donia secured her degree in architecture from the prestigious La Cambre Institute in Brussels. It was during her tenure as an architect in Tunis and Brussels that she crossed paths with Michel Boucquillon. They became inseparable, merging their personal lives and professional aspirations.
From Architecture to Sculpture
In 2000, the Boucquillon-Maaoui duo decided to settle in Italy, marking a significant turning point for Donia. She passionately delved into sculpture and painting, disciplines that allowed her to express her dual cultural legacy. "I am deeply European in the way I live. But Tunisia remains in my heart," she shares. Her work underscores the significance of her roots, especially when viewed through the lens of Muslim women.
Lola: An Emblematic Figure
Donia brought Lola to life, a bronze-cast figure that has earned a spot in renowned museums and art galleries worldwide. From the iconic MAXXI Museum in Rome to the CHARITY BUZZ Gallery in New York, Lola travels, bearing witness to the growing influence of its creator.
