Sonia Laudet – Textile Artist and Committed Designer, Blending Poetry and Upcycling

Sonia Laudet: creative fusion of textiles, craftsmanship, and sustainability

In the world of contemporary design, Sonia Laudet stands out as an emerging figure where subtle sensitivity meets deep purpose. A textile artist and upholsterer, she lives and works in Bayonne, on the southwest coast of France. Her career, rooted in fashion, tapestry, and sustainable creativity, reveals a poetic dialogue between material, light, and memory. She brings new life to discarded fabrics by turning everyday objects into meaningful, poetic creations.

A journey shaped by textiles

From fashion to upholstery: an intuitive and demanding path

After studying fashion design (BTS and the Parisian Chambre Syndicale), Sonia Laudet turned to upholstery to deepen her tactile relationship with fabrics.

Her move to Bayonne marked a decisive turn: she began to develop a personal textile language, blending craftsmanship with a contemporary vision. She describes her role as a balance between artist and artisan, seeking to build a unique and responsible graphic universe.

Sustainable design as a driving force

A visual approach to conscious consumption

Sonia Laudet builds her work around a strong ethic: valuing fabric scraps, restoring instead of discarding, and creating one-of-a-kind objects from leftover materials. Her philosophy: “waste is the new raw material.”

She embraces a mindful, thoughtful design approach in harmony with the Slow Life movement. Each piece tells a story, preserves a skill, and offers a new perspective on how we use and value material.

Signature collaborations and works

MKS × SL: an upcycled collection with Market Set

In 2019, Sonia Laudet began her first collaboration with Market Set, a French lighting brand from the Corep Lighting Group, based in Bègles since 1970. The project was born from a meeting with artistic director Géraldine Poly, who was drawn to both Sonia’s aesthetic universe and her ecological approach.

Together they created the MKS × SL collection, made entirely from textile waste generated at the factory. Wall and pendant lights are crafted in France from natural cotton or linen canvas, featuring fabric cords and powder-coated canopies. The result is delicate, graphic, and naturally elegant.

An evolving, values-driven collection

This collection is deliberately adaptive: colors change over time based on the available fabrics. Old colorways are discontinued as materials disappear. In September 2023, the collection evolved under the name Neo Nostalgia, with more contrast and tactile intensity, while maintaining its poetic softness.

Standout pieces

  • Sonia Laudet D80 Pendant: large and sculptural (Ø 80 cm, H 14 cm), with subtle textures and mineral-inspired overlays, ideal for generous interiors.

  • Sonia Laudet D60 Pendant: a more compact format (Ø 60 cm), available in Nostalgia (soft floral tones) or Malachite (elegant mineral geometry), hand-assembled using eco-design principles.

Harmony between form, material, and meaning

Mineral poetry and tactile expression

Sonia Laudet’s work is a delicate balance between structure and artistic freedom. Her creations evoke geological textures, natural rhythms, and organic forms. Through layered fabrics and subtle shades, she brings emotion into the design process.

Her style is both instinctive and precise, with a focus on light, contrast, and surface. Each light fixture is composed like a tapestry — with patience, intention, and sensitivity.

A forward-looking, committed designer

Exploring new formats and sustainable projects

Following the success of her lighting work, Sonia Laudet continues to explore design through textile reuse. She now creates cushions, wall hangings, limited editions, and bespoke pieces for interior designers, private clients, and hotels.

She is also considering creating rugs from recycled textiles. With each new material comes a new creative challenge — a new opportunity to rethink the life cycle of design. With Sonia Laudet, lighting becomes a manifesto of local, meaningful, and poetic design.
